What is a Car Polish?

Car polish is an abrasive compound that removes a thin layer of your clear coat to eliminate scratches, swirl marks, water spots, and oxidation. It restores the paint's clarity and gloss by leveling the surface so light reflects evenly instead of scattering off imperfections.

Polish vs. Wax: What's the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions in detailing, and the answer is simple:

  • Polish corrects - It removes defects from the paint surface
  • Wax protects - It adds a sacrificial layer on top of the paint

Polish is a prep step. Wax is a finishing step. Using wax without polishing first is like painting over a dirty wall. The surface looks better temporarily, but the problems are still there underneath.

Types of Polish

  • One-step polish - A medium-cut compound that removes light to moderate defects in a single pass. Good for maintenance details and cars in decent condition.
  • Compound (heavy cut) - Aggressive abrasive for deep scratches, heavy oxidation, and severe swirl marks. Requires a finishing polish afterward.
  • Finishing polish - Ultra-fine abrasive that removes the haze left by heavier compounds. Creates the final high-gloss finish.

What Does Polish Fix?

  • Swirl marks from improper washing
  • Light scratches (clear coat depth only)
  • Water spot etching
  • Oxidation and fading
  • Haze and dullness
  • Orange peel (with aggressive compounds)

When Does Your Car Need Polishing?

If your paint looks dull, has visible swirl marks under direct light, or feels rough even after washing, polishing will bring it back. Most cars benefit from a one-step polish once or twice a year, especially in Arizona where UV exposure accelerates paint degradation.

Can Polish Damage My Paint?

Polish removes clear coat, so excessive or improper polishing can thin your clear coat over time. That's why it matters who does it. A professional detailer uses a machine polisher with the right pad and compound combination, checks paint thickness, and removes only what's necessary. Hand polishing is less effective and inconsistent.
