What is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is the process of permanently removing surface imperfections from your car's clear coat using machine polishing. Unlike a quick hand polish or glaze that fills in scratches temporarily, paint correction actually levels the clear coat so the defects are gone for good.

What Counts as Paint Correction?

Paint correction specifically refers to the removal of:

  • Swirl marks - Circular micro-scratches from automatic car washes and improper hand washing
  • Scratches - Light to moderate scratches that haven't gone through the clear coat
  • Water spot etching - Mineral deposits that have etched into the paint surface
  • Oxidation - Chalky, faded paint from UV exposure
  • Buffer trails - Holograms left by inexperienced detailers using rotary polishers
  • Bird dropping etching - Acid damage from bird droppings left on paint too long

Single Stage vs. Multi-Stage Correction

Single stage (one-step) uses one compound and pad combination to remove 60-80% of defects. Good for cars in fair condition that just need a refresh.

Multi-stage (two or three step) uses progressively finer compounds and pads. A heavy-cut compound removes defects, then a finishing polish removes the haze from compounding. This achieves 90-95%+ correction and is what you need for showroom-level results.

Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating

If you're getting a ceramic coating, paint correction beforehand is critical. The coating locks in whatever the paint looks like at application time. If you coat over swirl marks and scratches, they're sealed in for the life of the coating. That's why every quality ceramic coating job starts with at least a one-step correction.

How Long Does Paint Correction Take?

A single-stage correction takes 2-4 hours depending on vehicle size. A full multi-stage correction can take 6-12+ hours for a large vehicle with significant defects. It's labor-intensive work that requires patience and skill.

How Much Does Paint Correction Cost in Phoenix, AZ?

Single-stage correction typically runs $150-250 depending on vehicle size. Multi-stage correction ranges from $300-600+. These prices reflect the time, skill, and products required to do the job right.
